Many of you are receiving letters in the mail saying you have won a large sum of money from Box Lotto out of Canada. This is not us - this is another scam. The criminals are using our good name and our logo to appear legitimate.
The scam works like this: The letter says you have won thousands in some kind of lottery drawing. Enclosed is a cashier’s check that you are to cash and then wire to pay the taxes on your winnings. The cashier’s checks may be from Lincoln Financial Trust or some other well know bank. Since it is a cashier's check, the bank will cash it for you. Now you wire the money to some person in Canada. They receive your cash and in about 10-days you get a call from your bank saying you cashed a counterfeit check. The bank takes back the money and your hard earned cash is in the pocket of some crook.
What should you do? DO NOT cash the checks! Take the material you received in the mail to your local police department. The FBI is investigating this crime. You may also file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) of the FBI at http://www.ic3.gov.
